Central Heating Water Quality Matters

Did you know that the quality of the water that is inside your Central Heating system can have a great impact on system efficiency, longevity and overall running maintenance cost?

If the water parameters aren’t right, it can cause accelerated corrosion of your system and damage to vital system components such as heat exchangers, circulator pumps, diverter valves, zone valves.

Most systems have components made of different types of metal. Stainless steel or aluminium heat exchangers, copper pipes, brass fittings, cast iron circulator pumps, and mild steel radiators. All these different metals mixed together with conductive water will begin the process of electrolytic or galvanic corrosion.

Currently most UK homes just top up their systems directly from the mains, without testing the parameters of the water.

Others simply get their systems dosed with inhibitors, again without checking the water quality parameters first.

Based on VDI2035 (Association of German Engineers) the water parameters have to be as close as possible to these:

  • Electrical conductivity <1500 µS for sealed systems, or <100 µS for open vent systems

  • pH value between 8.2 and 9.5 depending on what metals are present in the system

  • Hardness ideally below 300ppm

  • Dissolved Oxygen should be around 0.02 milligrams per litre

When you join Servyo we will carry out a free water quality check and recommend the best course of action to slow down system corrosion, all based on your specific system requirements.
